How can we help?

The App

What is FoodHero?

FoodHero is an app that connects food merchants to consumers to quickly sell surplus fresh food that would otherwise end up in the trash.

Food merchants end up tossing good food in landfills for many reasons. Either it is nearing its expiry date, it isn’t “pretty” enough for the shelves, they have extra products they aren’t able to sell in time, or a variety of other reasons.

At the same time, food prices are constantly on the rise and smart consumers are looking for ways to reduce their grocery bill, while still enjoying delicious, nutritious food.

FoodHero brings those two groups together on an easy-to-use, auction style platform to help reduce global food waste, save money for consumers and business, and save the planet.

Why become a FoodHero?

Save food, save money and save the planet. Why not become a FoodHero?

How does it work?

Food merchants

Scan and upload any food items that need to be sold quickly. You set the pricing and the pick up times.

Consumers

Browse grocery stores and restaurants in your area to find great deals on groceries and prepared foods. Make your purchases directly within the app, then pick up your items at the store location.

How do I set up my profile?

FoodHero is available for iOS and Android. After downloading the app, you’ll be asked to create your account, which must include your name, email address and location. Your location is used to find merchants in your area.

You may include additional information in your profile, such as a profile picture, or even connect your social networks, but that is entirely optional.

Most profiles are public (only first names are shown) and displayed on the FoodHero leaderboard. If you prefer to keep your profile private, you may do so by tapping the Settings icon at the top-right of your profile, selecting Edit Profile, then toggling the “Hide from leaderboards” option to “On”.

Creating your account and profile does not require payment information, but if you wish to purchase from the FoodHero merchants, you will be required to provide debit or credit card information.

What happens after I place an order?

FoodHero sends your order directly to the merchant, who will process your order request.

Because of limited supply and the auction-style nature of FoodHero, you must act quickly to grab this great food at steep discounts! Because otherwise other FoodHeroes will!

Once your order is confirmed, you will receive your order confirmation, including your pick up time and location. You will have had the opportunity to review pick up details before submitting an order. Please verify that pick up time and location are convenient for you before placing any order.

Around pickup time, simply present yourself at the store to receive your order. Store employees will need to verify your order confirmation, so be sure to bring your smartphone and be able to display the confirmation on your phone.

Where do I pick up my food?

Pick up is almost always at the store you purchase from, although select merchants may offer delivery. Some merchants – mostly restaurants – can allow you to also consume (eat!) the food on premise.

FoodHero partners with food merchants like restaurants and grocery stores. We do not produce, sell or distribute food ourselves. Instead, we arrange the sale of surplus food between merchants and consumers.

You will be able to see the pickup location and time before placing an order, and that information will be confirmed in your order confirmation.

We ask that you please respect your pick up time. Due to the perishability of food and limited supply, stores may not keep your order for more than an additional 12 or 24 hours if you are late for your pick up time. FoodHero lets each store apply its own policy regarding “late shows”, to ensure both food safety and smooth operations.

Do I have to pay more for paper or plastic bags?

That is at the discretion of the merchant. FoodHero does provide bags and boxes to merchants that want them. Some may prefer to use their own and may charge extra, though rarely more than a few cents. We do encourage you to bring your own reusable bags to further prevent waste

Is FoodHero free?

Yes! As a consumer, you only pay for the food you buy.

What happens if there is no food in my area?

Please let us know!

It’s possible there are merchants in your area that simply do not have surplus food available at the moment, or there may be limited FoodHero partners in your area. Also, make sure to check the app a few times a day as we have 3, 4 or even 5 daily auctions (depending on the area).

We are continually partnering with new merchants and looking for areas of high demand in which to form partnerships. If you are unable to find food in your area, please contact us and include your postal or zip code.

Is it possible that a product featured on the app isn’t available in stores?

The short answer is yes, but it’s very unlikely as we work very hard to avoid that. FoodHero works based on availability, with merchants only listing the surplus food they have available. Once the supply is sold out, the product is no longer available on FoodHero If you ever pay for a product the store can’t deliver to you for any reason, we will of course happily refund you for this item.

What if I am having a problem with the app?

If you run into any issues, please contact us here or through the Contact FoodHero option in your profile settings.

Please note that any issues with products or orders should be addressed to our Customer Service FoodHeoes collegues. Here is how to contact us directly with the store.

What if I am unhappy with my FoodHero experience?

We’re very sorry to hear that and would appreciate knowing more about your experience so that we can improve in the future. If you would like to share your experience, please contact us here or through the Send Feedback option in your FoodHero profile settings.

How do I delete my FoodHero account?

Simply go to the Profile section (in the app) and click on the “Delete my account” button. But be careful, once done it can’t be cancelled!

The Food

What type of food will I find on FoodHero?

Since we partner with both grocery stores and restaurants, you’ll find all kinds of food items. Produce, meat and prepared foods have shorter lifespans, so you’ll find a lot of these types of items, but you will also find dry goods and non-perishables, dairy products, specialty items and more.

Depending on your needs and preferences, you can search by food type, by merchant or even by specialty diet.

Can I find vegetarian, peanut free, gluten free foods?

Yes! Filter your search by specialty diet to see what’s available. Supply will, of course, depend on what merchants have available at any given time.

Are the products on FoodHero expired?

No! Wasted food is good food. It’s surplus food, or food that will expire soon. But it is perfectly good (and delicious) right now and ALWAYS sold to you BEFORE the “best before” dates.

How come you don’t show the expiry date?

Well, sometimes we do… If this info is provided to us by the retailer, we of course pass it on to you. That being said, one of the biggest sources of food waste is a misunderstanding of what best-before dates mean. These dates typically have nothing to do with food safety. They simply refer to the quality promise of the manufacturer. For example, a cereal company may promise a crunchy texture up until the best-before date. After that date, the cereal may start to lose some of that crunch, but it will still be perfectly safe to consume.

We are working hard to change that understanding in an effort to reduce food waste and ensure safe, edible food is used and not tossed. Though we don’t display the date, food listed on FoodHero is not expired.

The Mission

Why is food waste so important?

Food waste wastes... Everything.

Approximately 40% of all the food produced around the world is wasted each year. And when food is wasted, everything used to get that food onto our plates is wasted too - water, energy, fertilizers, pesticides (even organic ones), cropland and so much more.

In the US alone, 40 trillion litres of water is wasted each year because of food waste. That’s like leaving a giant tap running all year long!

The carbon footprint of food produced and not eaten (wasted) is estimated to 3.3 Gtonnes of CO2 equivalent; as such, food wastage ranks as the 3rd top emitter after USA and China. The equivalent of 1 billion cars on the road!

How does FoodHero reduce food waste?

We help rescue food like surplus stock, items nearing their best-before dates (that are still perfectly safe), produce that isn’t “pretty” enough for the shelves, items with damaged (but still safely sealed) packaging, prepared meals that need to sell quickly and more.

FoodHero empowers food merchants to quickly and easily track and sell these perfectly safe and delicious food items by connecting them with consumers who can enjoy amazing deals on groceries and restaurant meals.

It’s more money in everyone’s pockets and a lot less food in landfills. Win-win!

After using FoodHero, how will I know I am actually saving the planet?

We show you the numbers!

Go to your profile tab in the FoodHero app. Near the top, just below your profile picture, you’ll see how much water and CO2 you’ve saved, as well as the total approximate weight of food you’ve saved from landfills.
